One-Shot Films: A Unique Way of Telling Stories

Introduction


Films are not only about the story they tell but also about the way they are filmed. One of the most fascinating filmmaking techniques is the one-shot film, where a film or an episode appears to be recorded in one continuous take without visible cuts. This technique creates the feeling that the audience is experiencing the events in real time. After reading about one-shot films and studying the case of Adolescence, I understood how this style of filmmaking makes stories more realistic, emotional, and engaging.


What is a One-Shot Film?


A one-shot film (also called a continuous take or oner) is a film that is shot in a single uninterrupted take or is carefully edited with hidden cuts to create the illusion of one continuous shot. Unlike traditional films, which use many camera cuts and edits, one-shot films allow the camera to move continuously through the scenes. This technique requires extensive planning, rehearsals, perfect timing, and coordination between the actors, camera operators, and the production team.


The main purpose of a one-shot film is to make the audience feel present in the story. It creates realism, builds suspense, and allows viewers to connect more deeply with the characters because there are no interruptions in the flow of the narrative.


Case Study 1: Adolescence (Netflix)


One of the most recent examples of one-shot filmmaking is the Netflix series Adolescence. Each episode is presented as a single continuous shot, following the characters in real time. The story centres on a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering his classmate while exploring themes such as adolescence, family relationships, bullying, social media influence, and emotional trauma.


The one-shot technique makes the audience feel as if they are walking beside the characters throughout the story. Every conversation, expression, and emotional moment unfolds naturally without interruption. This creates a powerful viewing experience and makes the story feel realistic and emotionally intense.


Case Study 2: 1917 (2019)


Another outstanding example is 1917, directed by Sam Mendes. The film follows two British soldiers during the First World War who are assigned a dangerous mission to deliver an urgent message that could save hundreds of lives. Although the film contains hidden edits, it is designed to appear as one continuous shot.


This filmmaking style creates constant tension and keeps the audience emotionally connected to the characters. As the soldiers travel across battlefields, viewers experience the danger, fear, and urgency alongside them. The continuous-shot technique makes the film more immersive and memorable.


My Understanding


After studying one-shot films, I realised that this technique is much more than a visual experiment. It changes the way audiences experience a story. The absence of visible cuts makes the events feel natural and realistic, as if they are happening right in front of us. While watching Adolescence and learning about 1917, I felt that the continuous camera movement increased the emotional impact and helped me understand the characters' experiences more deeply.


Creating a one-shot film is technically challenging because every movement, dialogue, and camera angle must be perfectly coordinated. However, when executed successfully, it creates a unique cinematic experience that leaves a lasting impression on viewers.


Conclusion


One-shot filmmaking is a remarkable cinematic technique that combines artistic creativity with technical excellence. It allows audiences to experience stories in a continuous and immersive way, making emotions more authentic and the narrative more engaging. The examples of Adolescence and 1917 demonstrate how this technique can enhance storytelling by creating realism, suspense, and emotional depth. Studying these films has helped me appreciate the skill and planning involved in filmmaking and has shown me that the way a story is presented can be just as powerful as the story itself.
